Commercial Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting

Electrician using electrical test equipment to troubleshoot a commercial electrical control system.

We don't guess. We test.

Electrical problems aren't always obvious.

Finding the actual cause can require more than a multimeter and visual inspection. MTE Electric uses professional electrical testing and diagnostic equipment to identify problems and make repair decisions based on actual test results.

Electrical Problems We Repair

From an outlet that stops working to a circuit breaker that keeps tripping, electrical problems can interrupt your business. MTE Electric troubleshoots and repairs problems in existing commercial buildings, including:

  • Power loss — Equipment, outlets, or sections of your building without power.

  • Tripping breakers or blown fuses — Recurring interruptions that need the underlying cause identified.

  • Failed outlets and switches — Loose, damaged, or nonworking receptacles, GFCIs, and switches.

  • Damaged wiring — Faults caused by wear, heat, moisture, physical damage, or improper connections.

  • Overheating connections — Excessive heat at wiring connections, breakers, and electrical devices.

  • Lighting failures — Flickering lights, fixtures that won’t turn on, and failed lighting components or controls.

We test to find the cause, explain what we find, and make repairs based on the results.

Electrical Testing & Measurements

Klein MM720 multimeter used by MTE Electric to measure electrical current, test motor capacitors, and diagnose commercial electrical equipment.

When We Use It

We use a professional multimeter when troubleshooting electrical equipment and making precise electrical measurements. This includes measuring current when setting programmable lighting drivers and ballasts, testing capacitors when diagnosing motor problems, and verifying voltage, resistance, and other electrical conditions during troubleshooting.

How It Benefits You

Accurate measurements help us determine whether electrical components are operating within their intended specifications. This allows us to properly configure replacement components, identify failing capacitors and other electrical problems, and make repair decisions based on actual test results rather than guesswork.

Branch Circuit Analyzer

Ideal SureTest branch circuit analyzer used by MTE Electric to test receptacles, branch circuits, voltage drop, wiring conditions, and GFCI operation in commercial electrical systems.
Ideal SureTest branch circuit analyzer used by MTE Electric to test receptacles, branch circuits, voltage drop, wiring conditions, and GFCI operation in commercial electrical systems.

When We Use It

When troubleshooting receptacles and branch circuits, we use a branch circuit analyzer to evaluate outlet wiring, voltage drop, circuit performance, and GFCI operation. This helps identify wiring issues, overloaded circuits, and other electrical problems that may not be detected with a standard outlet tester.

How It Benefits You

A branch circuit analyzer allows us to quickly verify circuit performance and properly test GFCI receptacles, helping identify hidden electrical issues before they lead to equipment damage or service interruptions. Accurate testing leads to more reliable repairs and safer electrical systems.

Thermal Imaging

Klein Tools thermal imager used by MTE Electric to detect overheating electrical connections, breakers, motors, transformers, and other components in commercial electrical systems.

When We Use It

When troubleshooting electrical equipment, we use a thermal camera to identify overheating breakers, electrical connections, wiring, motors, transformers, and other components. Thermal imaging helps locate abnormal heat patterns that may indicate loose connections, overloaded circuits, or failing equipment.

How It Benefits You

A thermal camera allows us to identify hidden electrical problems without unnecessary disassembly. By detecting overheating components early, we can often prevent unexpected equipment failures, reduce downtime, and improve the reliability and safety of your electrical system.

Insulation Resistance Testing

When We Use It

When electrical wiring or motors are suspected of being damaged by age, moisture, heat, or physical damage, we use an insulation resistance tester to evaluate the condition of the insulation protecting the conductors and motor windings. It is also valuable when troubleshooting nuisance breaker trips, blown fuses, or intermittent electrical faults.

How It Benefits You

An insulation resistance tester helps us identify hidden wiring problems that cannot be found with a standard multimeter. By accurately locating insulation failures, we can recommend the appropriate repair, reduce unnecessary parts replacement, and improve the reliability and safety of your electrical system.

LED Driver Programming

FIELDSET LED driver programmer used by MTE Electric to configure programmable constant-current LED drivers for commercial lighting repairs.

When We Use It

When an LED driver has failed or requires configuration, we use our FIELDSET LED Driver Programmer to program compatible constant-current LED drivers to the correct operating current. This is especially valuable when replacing programmable drivers in commercial lighting fixtures where factory settings are unavailable.

How It Benefits You

Owning a professional LED driver programmer allows us to configure replacement drivers in the field, reducing downtime and eliminating delays while waiting for factory-programmed replacements. This helps restore compatible lighting systems more quickly and accurately.

Circuit Tracing & Identification

Klein Tools circuit tracer used by MTE Electric to trace concealed wiring, identify breakers on circuits without power, and help locate open wiring faults.

When We Use It

When wiring is concealed behind walls or circuit identification is missing, we use a circuit tracer to follow wiring paths, identify breakers, and help locate opens in electrical circuits. It is especially useful when a circuit has lost power and conventional breaker identification methods cannot be used.

How It Benefits You

Circuit tracing helps us locate and identify concealed wiring with less guesswork and unnecessary opening of walls. It can also help narrow down the location of wiring faults, reducing troubleshooting time and allowing us to make more targeted repairs.

Underground Circuit Tracing

Tempo 501 underground circuit tracer used by MTE Electric to locate buried electrical wiring, parking lot lighting circuits, site lighting, and underground feeders.

When We Use It

When troubleshooting underground electrical systems, we use an underground circuit tracer to locate and follow buried wiring without unnecessary excavation. It is especially useful for tracing parking lot lighting circuits, site lighting, underground feeders, and other buried electrical wiring when the original routing is unknown.

How It Benefits You

Locating underground wiring before digging helps us troubleshoot problems more efficiently and determine where electrical circuits actually run. This can reduce unnecessary excavation, minimize disruption to your property, and help us make more targeted repairs.

Electrical Lockout and Tagout

Electrical disconnect secured in the off position with a lockout device and safety lock to prevent unintended re-energization during electrical work.

When We Use It

When servicing or repairing electrical equipment that can be safely de-energized, we use lockout and tagout procedures to secure the electrical disconnect or other energy-isolating device in the off position. This helps prevent equipment from being accidentally re-energized while electrical work is being performed.

How It Benefits You

Lockout and tagout provides an important layer of protection during electrical repairs and maintenance. By controlling the energy source before work begins, we help protect our electrician and others in the facility from unexpected equipment startup or electrical energization while repairs are underway.

Arc-Flash Personal Protective Equipment

Arc-flash protective suit, face shield, and safety gear used by MTE Electric when working around electrical equipment with potential arc-flash hazards.

When We Use It

When troubleshooting or inspecting electrical equipment where an arc-flash hazard may be present, we use appropriate arc-flash personal protective equipment (PPE) before approaching or working around the equipment. Our arc-flash gear is carried on our service vehicle so it is available when electrical conditions require additional protection.

How It Benefits You

Electrical troubleshooting can sometimes involve damaged or energized equipment that presents hazards beyond normal service conditions. Having arc-flash PPE readily available allows our electrician to approach these situations with the proper protective equipment rather than taking unnecessary risks when evaluating an electrical problem.
